Acyclovir (Zovirax®) is a medication licensed for the treatment of shingles, chickenpox, and genital herpes. By preventing the viruses that cause these conditions from multiplying, the antiviral drug helps the body fight the infection. Acyclovir is available by prescription only and comes in tablet, capsule, and liquid form. While most people tolerate this medication well, potential side effects include a general ill feeling, vomiting, and diarrhea. Serious side effects are less common.
