Valacyclovir hydrochloride (Valtrex®) is an antiviral medication approved for the treatment of shingles, cold sores, and genital herpes. When used to treat genital herpes, the drug can also help prevent outbreaks from recurring and prevent spreading the virus to other people. Before your healthcare provider prescribes valacyclovir, make sure he or she is aware if you are pregnant, have HIV or AIDS, or have any allergies. Potential side effects include abdominal pain, vomiting, and painful menstrual periods.
