Serious Reactions to Zostavax
There are a number of rare but serious side effects with Zostavax that you should report to your healthcare provider. Studies have shown a very small but slightly increased risk of these problems. Because these side effects are so rare, it is difficult to tell whether they are actually caused by the vaccine or by other factors. These possible side effects include, but are not limited to:
- A rash that looks like shingles or chickenpox
- Heart problems, such as congestive heart failure (CHF) or a heart attack
- Worsening of asthma
- Polymyalgia rheumatica, a condition which causes muscle stiffness and pain in the neck, shoulders, and hips
- Signs of an allergic reaction, including unexplained rash, hives, itching, unexplained swelling, wheezing, or difficulty breathing or swallowing.
It is possible that you may experience some or none of the Zostavax side effects listed in this article. Unfortunately, it can be difficult to tell whether any particular side effect is caused by Zostavax or other factors.
Therefore, make sure to let your healthcare provider know if you develop any side effects while taking Zostavax or if something "just does not seem right." While it may not be a side effect, your healthcare provider will be able to diagnose and treat the problem.
